This Girl Became a Successful Child Star after Bio Parents Gave Her up to Family Who Had ‘No Plans’ to Adopt

Melissa Gilbert was born in Los Angeles in 1964 and adopted just one day later by Barbara Crane and Paul Gilbert. Her adoptive parents had been undergoing fertility treatments and had not seriously planned to adopt, but when they received a call about a baby girl, everything changed. Melissa grew up believing her biological father had been a Rhodes Scholar and her mother a prima ballerina. Years later, she discovered those stories were largely untrue. Her biological mother had been a dancer, while her father worked as a stock car racer and sign painter.

Melissa became especially close to her adoptive father, Paul. When he died in 1976, she was told that he had suffered a stroke. Many years later, she learned the painful truth: Paul had died by suicide. The revelation left her devastated, affecting her sleep, appetite, and emotional health. She eventually sought professional help and hired a detective to learn more about her father’s final years. She discovered that he had suffered severe physical pain and had previously threatened suicide while receiving medical treatment.

Although learning the truth about her childhood was deeply painful, Melissa eventually forgave her adoptive mother for keeping the secret. She also used her experience to support mental-health awareness and suicide-prevention efforts.

Melissa later became famous for playing Laura Ingalls Wilder on *Little House on the Prairie*, appearing on the beloved series from 1974 to 1983. Despite the difficult circumstances of her childhood, she built a successful career and family of her own.

Her story is ultimately one of resilience. Melissa has openly discussed adoption, family secrets, grief, and healing, showing that **“a painful start does not have to determine the rest of a person’s life.”**
