Snake Inside Home: Stay Calm and Act Safely

Finding a snake inside your home can be frightening, but snakes usually enter houses while looking for food, shelter, warmth, or relief from extreme weather. Small openings around doors, windows, pipes, garages, and foundations can give them easy access. Homes may also attract snakes when rodents or insects are present, since these can become a source of food.

If you discover a snake indoors, do not rush toward it or try to grab it. Keep children and pets away, stay at a safe distance, and close nearby doors if you can do so without getting close. Many snakes are harmless, but identifying one correctly can be difficult. In this case, “the homeowner carefully stepped back and called a local wildlife professional” instead of trying to remove the animal alone. The professional later explained that the snake had likely entered while searching for shelter or prey.

After the snake was safely removed, the homeowner checked the property for possible entry points. Gaps around doors, windows, vents, and pipes were sealed, while outdoor clutter and piles of debris were cleared away. The family also looked for signs of rodents and insects, which could make the property more attractive to snakes.

The experience showed why staying calm is important. “Panic can make a situation worse,” while keeping your distance and getting professional help can prevent a frightening situation from becoming dangerous. Homeowners can also reduce future encounters by sealing openings, keeping yards tidy, removing hiding places, and dealing with pest problems.

A snake inside the house does not automatically mean there is an immediate threat. The safest response is to avoid disturbing it, keep people and pets away, and allow a trained professional to handle the situation when necessary.
