What Does the “M” on an RSVP Card Actually Mean?

When you open a wedding invitation and see an RSVP card with a line beginning with the letter “M,” it may look confusing at first. However, the meaning is actually quite simple. The “M” is the beginning of a traditional courtesy title, such as “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” or “Miss,” which guests can complete before writing their name.

The tradition comes from older invitation etiquette, when formal titles and proper forms of address were much more common. Instead of printing several options, invitation designers used a single “M” as a convenient prompt for guests. Although weddings today are often more casual, this small detail has remained on many RSVP cards.

Importantly, you are not necessarily required to use the “M” format. Modern guests may prefer to write their name without a traditional title, and that is generally perfectly acceptable. The main goal is simply to make it clear who is responding to the invitation.

The “M” also has nothing to do with whether you are attending, your meal choice, or the number of guests. Those questions are usually listed separately on the RSVP card. When responding, simply follow the instructions provided by the couple, give your name clearly, indicate whether you will attend, and answer any additional questions.

If you are designing your own wedding invitations, you can also skip the traditional format entirely. A simple “Name” or “Guest Name” line may be clearer and more modern. In the end, the mysterious “M” is nothing more than the first letter of a courtesy title, left for guests to complete before writing their name.
