What Does SSSS Mean on a Boarding Pass?

Seeing **SSSS** on your boarding pass can be worrying, but it does not automatically mean you have done anything wrong. SSSS stands for **Secondary Security Screening Selection**, which means the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has selected you for additional screening. This can happen randomly or because of certain travel circumstances, such as a last-minute booking, a one-way ticket, travel to certain regions, or a name that resembles someone on a watch list. Most importantly, **“SSSS does not mean you are on a no-fly list or suspected of a crime.”**

If you receive SSSS, arrive at the airport about **30 to 45 minutes earlier** than usual. Keep your belongings organized and make liquids and electronics easy to access. The additional screening may include a more detailed pat-down, an inspection of your carry-on or checked luggage, or swabbing your hands and belongings for traces of explosives. While the process can be inconvenient, it is generally straightforward and may only add a few extra minutes to your airport experience.

The exact length of the screening depends on the airport and how busy security lines are. Staying calm and cooperating with security officers can help everything move more smoothly. If you feel you are being treated unfairly, you can politely request to speak with a supervisor.

For travelers who repeatedly receive SSSS, especially because of a possible name match, the Department of Homeland Security’s Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (TRIP) may provide assistance. A Redress Number can help prevent confusion with another traveler who has a similar name.

Ultimately, SSSS is simply an **additional security procedure**, not proof of wrongdoing. Arriving early, staying organized, and remaining calm can make the experience much less stressful and help you get on with your trip.
