Doctors Warn: Your Sleeping Position May Affect Acid Reflux Symptoms

If you regularly wake up with a burning sensation in your chest, a sour taste in your mouth, or the feeling that stomach contents are coming back toward your throat, your sleeping position may be worth considering. Acid reflux can become worse at night because lying down removes the help of gravity. For some people, changing the side they sleep on may reduce these uncomfortable symptoms.

Research suggests that sleeping on the **left side** may be better for nighttime acid reflux than sleeping on the right side or flat on the back. Studies have found that left-side sleeping is linked to shorter periods of acid exposure and faster clearance of refluxed material. “It doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s an easy change that doesn’t require medication or special equipment.” By contrast, the right side may increase acid exposure in people who already experience nighttime reflux.

Sleeping completely flat can also make symptoms worse for some people. In these cases, elevating the upper body with a wedge or by raising the head of the bed may help. Simply adding pillows under your head may not work as well because the goal is to create a gentle incline through the upper body.

Your habits before bed can matter, too. Experts recommend finishing meals at least **three hours before lying down**, especially if you regularly experience nighttime symptoms. Staying upright after eating and identifying personal trigger foods, such as spicy or high-fat foods, coffee, chocolate, or citrus, may also help.

Changing your sleeping position **cannot cure GERD**, but it can be one useful part of managing symptoms. If reflux continues despite lifestyle changes, talk with a healthcare professional. Seek medical attention for difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, or significant chest pain. “Think of sleeping position as one useful piece of the puzzle rather than a replacement for medical treatment.”
