6 Things You Should Never Flush Down the Toilet—and What to Do Instead

Your toilet isn’t swallowing your mistakes. It’s storing them. Every “just this once” flush of wipes, hair, or grease can become a problem later. Toilets are designed mainly for human waste and toilet paper, while other materials can stay inside the plumbing and slowly create blockages. What seems harmless at the moment may eventually lead to a clogged pipe, an overflowing toilet, or an expensive repair.

Hair can twist together inside pipes, dental floss can catch other debris, and cotton products and wipes can gather into stubborn clumps. Grease is especially troublesome because it can harden as it moves through the plumbing, creating a thick buildup that becomes difficult to remove. These problems usually do not appear immediately, which makes the habit easy to ignore. Instead, you may first notice a weaker flush, strange gurgling sounds, or water rising higher than usual.

The safest approach is simple: keep anything that does not belong in the toilet out of the bowl. Instead of flushing wipes, cotton products, hair, floss, or grease, place them in a nearby trash can. A small wastebasket beside the toilet can make this much easier, especially for families with children.

It also helps to establish one simple household rule: “only waste and toilet paper.” Taking a few seconds to think before flushing can prevent a much bigger problem later. What seems like a tiny shortcut today could otherwise turn into a messy bathroom, blocked plumbing, and an unexpected repair bill.
