Why Do Brides Toss Bouquets, Anyway?

Today, the bouquet toss is a fun part of many wedding receptions. Guests laugh, take photos, and compete to catch the flowers. But this tradition has a surprisingly practical and chaotic history. Centuries ago, weddings were surrounded by strong superstitions, and people believed a bride carried extraordinary good fortune on her wedding day. Guests wanted to take a piece of that luck home with them.

For the bride, this belief could become a problem. Guests would sometimes crowd around her and try to tear pieces from her dress or veil. Owning part of the bridal gown was believed to bring blessings, fertility, or better chances of finding love. As the original article explains, “What began as a celebration could quickly become overwhelming,” leaving brides struggling to escape the crowd.

To protect her dress and create a way to leave peacefully, the bride began throwing her flowers into the crowd instead. The bouquet gave guests something else to chase while the newlyweds slipped away. “It was a remarkably simple idea—and an effective one.” The groom sometimes followed this by throwing the bride’s garter to guests, which was also believed to carry the couple’s good fortune.

Over time, the tradition became less about superstition and more about celebration. The person who caught the bouquet was eventually said to be the next to marry, turning the moment into a playful part of the reception rather than a desperate attempt to claim good luck.

Today, couples have more freedom to decide how they want to celebrate. Some keep the traditional bouquet toss, while others make it more inclusive, replace the flowers with creative prizes, or skip it completely. Still, knowing its history makes the tradition more interesting: what looks like a simple wedding game once helped brides protect their clothing and escape an overexcited crowd.
