I found this in my son’s room while cleaning.

What began as an ordinary afternoon of cleaning suddenly became an unsettling mystery. While vacuuming under the bed, I noticed a small, pale object hiding in the shadows. Its curved shape and darkened tip made it look strangely organic. For a moment, I wondered if it could be a parasite, a dead animal, or something brought inside by a rodent. The familiar bedroom suddenly felt much less comfortable.

I called my son over, hoping he would recognize it, but he was just as confused. We crouched beside the bed, studying the object while imagining all kinds of frightening possibilities. When he quietly asked, “What if it’s a worm?” I grabbed a broom and carefully pushed the object. Nothing happened at first. I nudged it again, and it slowly rolled into the light. That was when our fears disappeared.

The terrifying discovery turned out to be nothing more than half of a dusty pistachio shell, stained with leftover seasoning. For several seconds, we simply stared at it before my son burst into laughter, followed by me. Only moments earlier, we had imagined parasites and hidden dangers, but the truth was simply a forgotten snack.

The experience reminded me how quickly the human mind can turn uncertainty into fear. When we don’t have enough information, our brains often assume the worst because recognizing danger quickly has always been important for survival.

By the end of the day, the “deadly pistachio incident,” as my son jokingly called it, had become a family story. It taught me that fear can grow from incomplete information, while understanding can make even the strangest mystery disappear. Sometimes, what scares us most is not reality, but our imagination.
