FBI issues update in Nancy Guthrie case after discovering a “new message,” intensifying investigation

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, 84, the mother of TODAY co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has drawn national attention as authorities continue searching for answers. Nancy was last seen after she failed to attend church on February 1 in Catalina Foothills, Tucson, Arizona. When repeated attempts to reach her failed, concern quickly escalated. Investigators treated her home as an active crime scene and said they do not believe she left voluntarily. Savannah Guthrie has thanked law enforcement and the public for their support as her family waits in painful uncertainty.

Federal attention increased on February 5 after former President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that he had directed “ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and Local Law Enforcement’s, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY.” While officials acknowledged the value of federal assistance, they stressed that investigations must follow careful procedures and that added resources do not guarantee quick answers.

On February 6, the FBI confirmed it had received a new message that may be connected to Nancy’s disappearance. Earlier reports mentioned alleged ransom messages demanding Bitcoin, but authorities have not verified their authenticity. Investigators said each communication is being closely examined to determine whether it is real or a hoax. A reward of up to $50,000 remains available for information leading to her recovery or an arrest.

Search efforts include repeated examinations of Nancy Guthrie’s home and detailed forensic work. Investigators are reviewing physical evidence, phone records, surveillance footage, and digital activity to reconstruct her final movements. Officials emphasize that even minor details could prove critical.

As the investigation continues, the emotional toll on the family and community remains heavy. Authorities urge patience and caution, noting that unverified tips can distract from real leads, while efforts remain focused on finding Nancy and uncovering the truth.
