Why Do Hotel Showers Have Only Half a Glass Door? The Surprisingly Practical Reason

If you’ve ever walked into a hotel bathroom and noticed a shower with only one fixed piece of glass, you may have wondered why there is no traditional door. There are no hinges, handles, or sliding tracks—just a glass panel, an open entrance, and a drain in the floor. Although the design may look unusual, it is actually a practical choice that has become common in hotels around the world.

One major advantage is easier cleaning. Hotel bathrooms must be cleaned frequently, and traditional shower doors can have tracks, hinges, rubber seals, and other areas where soap and dirt collect. A fixed glass panel removes many of these difficult-to-clean parts. **“There are no rollers to scrub, no tracks to clear, and no moving door to maneuver.”** This allows housekeeping staff to clean bathrooms faster and can reduce maintenance work over time.

The simpler design can also save hotels money. Traditional shower doors have several mechanical parts that can become loose, damaged, or worn out. A fixed glass panel does not slide or swing and has far fewer components that can break. For hotels with dozens or hundreds of bathrooms, avoiding frequent repairs can make a noticeable difference.

Another reason is appearance. A half-glass shower keeps the bathroom visually open, making smaller spaces appear brighter and larger. It also fits the clean, minimalist style often used in modern hotels. This is particularly useful in European hotels, where bathrooms can be compact and every bit of space matters.

Of course, the design has one drawback: some water can reach the bathroom floor. The showerhead should be aimed toward the enclosed side, while the sloped floor and drain help handle escaping water. **“The goal isn’t necessarily to create a perfectly sealed box.”** Instead, the half-glass shower is designed to be simple, attractive, practical, and easy to maintain.
