The Things You Can Take Home From A Hotel And The Things That You Absolutely Can’t

Hotel rooms often contain small comforts that make a stay feel special, from soft slippers and toiletries to pens and notepads. But one question often comes to mind: “Can I take this home?” The answer depends on how the item is provided. A useful rule is simple: if something is disposable, consumable, or clearly complimentary, it is more likely to be yours. If it is meant to remain in the room for the next guest, leave it behind.

Small toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, soap, shower caps, and grooming kits are generally provided for guest use. Disposable slippers, hotel branded pens, notepads, postcards, brochures, and other promotional materials are also usually safe to take. Individual coffee pods, tea bags, sugar, and creamers may be complimentary, but always check first. Minibar snacks and drinks are different because they may be charged automatically, especially in rooms using sensors.

Items such as towels, sheets, pillows, blankets, duvets, hair dryers, irons, kettles, coffee machines, remotes, artwork, and decorations generally belong to the hotel. Bathrobes are a gray area because some hotels allow guests to keep or purchase them, while others expect them to remain in the room. “So don’t assume. Check the hotel’s policy.”

Key cards and religious books can also depend on the hotel’s rules. If you accidentally take something, contact the hotel and ask what they would like you to do. Hotels may charge for missing property, particularly for reusable or valuable items.

The safest rule is straightforward: “If you aren’t sure, ask.” Before leaving, check the hotel’s information for complimentary items or replacement prices. A pen, postcard, or small toiletry can be a nice souvenir, but towels, equipment, furniture, and decorations should normally stay in the room.
