Truth About Expired Canned Food

Finding an old can of beans, soup, or vegetables at the back of the pantry can make you wonder whether it is still safe to eat. However, the date printed on many canned foods is mainly about quality, not safety. “Best By” or “Best Before” generally indicates when the food is expected to have its best flavor and texture. A can that has passed this date is not automatically spoiled.

When stored properly in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, canned foods can often remain usable for years beyond the printed date. High-acid foods such as tomatoes, pineapple, and citrus generally keep their quality for a shorter period, while low-acid foods such as beans, corn, and canned meats can last much longer. According to the original article, “As long as the can is intact and undamaged, canned food can remain safe indefinitely,” although its taste and texture may decline over time.

The condition of the can matters more than the date alone. A bulging lid or can can be a warning sign of dangerous bacterial growth, while leaks, heavy rust, or deep dents around seams may mean the seal has been damaged. These cans should be discarded rather than opened.

You should also be careful when opening an old can. An unusual smell, strange discoloration, or liquid that spurts from the can can indicate that the food should not be eaten. “If you notice any of these, do not taste the food. Just toss it safely.”

Understanding canned-food dates can help prevent unnecessary waste and save money. Instead of automatically throwing away an old can, check its condition, storage history, appearance, and smell. If the can is intact and the food shows no warning signs, the printed date alone does not necessarily mean it has become unsafe.
