The Unseen World of Scent: Decoding the Canine Universe

Dogs experience the world largely through scent. Their noses contain far more smell receptors than ours, and a much larger part of their brains is devoted to processing odors. For dogs, sniffing is not simply about finding food—it is a way of gathering information about people, animals, and their surroundings. That is why a dog may walk directly toward a person’s private areas. What seems embarrassing to humans is actually a natural form of canine communication.

The reason dogs often focus on the groin and armpits is connected to apocrine glands, which produce chemical signals that can reveal information about the body. These areas can carry scents influenced by hormones, stress, emotions, and changes in physical condition. Dogs can detect tiny differences in these smells that humans cannot notice. As the article explains, “our scent changes dynamically in response to our feelings.” A dog may therefore pick up on fear, nervousness, excitement, or other emotional changes simply by smelling a person.

Sniffing also serves as a canine greeting. Dogs naturally investigate scent-rich areas when meeting each other, using smell to learn about identity, health, and emotional state. When they do this to humans, they are essentially applying their normal social behavior to a human body. The article describes it as “the exact biological equivalent of shaking someone’s hand, looking them in the eye, and asking, ‘Hello, who are you, and how are you feeling today?’”

Although the behavior is natural, it can still be redirected. Owners can teach dogs to sniff a person’s hand instead, use commands such as “sit” or “leave it,” and reward calm greetings. Gentle redirection works better than punishment because sniffing is an instinctive behavior.

Ultimately, a dog sniffing someone’s private area is usually not an act of rudeness. It is simply the dog using its most powerful sense to understand the world. What feels awkward to us is, from the dog’s perspective, a normal way of saying hello and gathering information.
