Why Do People Put Empty Plastic Bottles in the Washing Machine?

An ordinary plastic bottle may seem like nothing more than recycling, but some people use a clean, empty bottle as a simple laundry trick. The method involves placing the bottle inside the washing machine with a load of clothes and allowing it to move around as the drum turns. Supporters believe this extra movement may help stop clothes from becoming tightly twisted together, allowing water and detergent to move more freely between garments. The idea has attracted attention because it costs nothing and does not require a special laundry product.

Some people also believe the bottle may help reduce wrinkles by preventing clothes from becoming heavily bunched during the wash. However, the results can vary depending on the machine, load size, and fabrics involved. There is limited scientific evidence that an ordinary plastic bottle consistently makes clothes cleaner or less wrinkled, so it is best viewed as an optional household experiment rather than a proven laundry method.

If you try it, the bottle should be clean, empty, undamaged, and have its cap tightly secured. It should never contain water, detergent, or cleaning chemicals. A damaged bottle with cracks or sharp edges should not be used because it could break during the cycle. Delicate fabrics such as silk, lace, or fine wool should still be washed according to their care instructions.

The type of load also matters. Avoid overloading the machine so clothes have enough room to move naturally. Using the recommended amount of detergent and choosing the correct washing setting can make a greater difference than unusual laundry hacks. Sorting clothes by color and fabric can also help protect garments.

Ultimately, the plastic bottle trick is inexpensive and easy to test, but there is no guarantee it will improve every wash. Proper loading, suitable detergent, correct settings, and regular machine maintenance remain the most dependable ways to get good results. If the washer becomes unusually noisy or the bottle becomes damaged, stop the experiment.
