The Name Printed On Page Four, And The Slow Careful Year That Followed For My Son And Me

My mother had been dead for eleven years, but Nolan had used her name on an old insurance record. He added her as an authorized driver so Delphine could be covered without a credit check she would not have passed. When Emmett called Nolan about it, he stopped laughing. Later, Nolan brought the white sedan in with Delphine beside him. Neither looked at me. I had spent months believing the car represented another secret, but the truth was different.

The white sedan belonged to a hospice nurse. Delphine’s mother had been dying in their spare room since February, and nobody had told me. She had stage four illness, and Delphine believed asking me for help would mean admitting they needed me again. I had been so focused on everything I had given that I failed to see what was happening around me.

She was not entirely wrong to think it. I had kept a ledger. I had never said so out loud, but I had kept one, and people can feel a ledger in a room. Her mother died in June, and I attended the funeral, sitting quietly in the back. In the parking lot, Delphine followed me and finally said, “Thank you for coming.” Then she said my name: Marlene.

Nolan eventually bought a used Corolla with his own credit, which was perfectly fine. He had simply never bothered to check. He began paying for it himself and started calling me on Sundays. I did not forgive everyone dramatically. I just stopped keeping the ledger, which took me longer than turning in a car. I realized I had spent thirty-eight months paying for a vehicle so my son could feel like a man in front of his wife.

The hardest truth was understanding why I had allowed it. Being needed had become the only seat at that table anybody ever offered me. So I turned in the car and chose something different for myself. “It turns out you can be a woman with a name instead of a woman with a checkbook.” But changing that took one important step: I had to be willing to go first.
