My Son Tried to Take the House I Had Already Sold

Six months ago, I secretly sold my house after discovering that my son, Greg, and his wife, Dana, planned to sell it themselves and force me into a nursing home. Yesterday, Greg placed my suitcase by the door and said, “A nursing home has a bed for you, Mom. Sign the house over and leave by Friday.” I calmly replied, “First, ask the man who owns this house.” Greg laughed, believing the property still belonged to the family.

The house had been built by my late husband, Walter, in 1974. After his death, Greg and Dana moved in, took our bedroom, and left me sleeping in the sewing room. Greg also began taking $300 from my pension each month. Then I overheard him saying, “She’s eighty-one. The house is worth four hundred thousand. We’ll list it the day she’s out.” That was when I decided to protect myself.

While they were away, I took Walter’s old folder and the deed to a lawyer. The sale was completed legally, and the new owner agreed to give me a lifetime lease for one dollar a year, allowing me to remain in the home. I hid the new deed and said nothing. For six months, I watched Greg and Dana prepare to sell a house they no longer owned.

When Greg finally ordered me to leave, I brought out the folder. “Your father left it to me,” I said. “And six months ago, I sold it.” Dana stared at me and whispered, “Sold it? To whom?” I handed them the document and said, “You’ll find out soon.”

A knock came at the door. The new owner stood outside with my lawyer. Greg stared at the papers as the lawyer calmly said, “Perhaps we should discuss who has been living in whose house.”
