During warmer months, you may notice people leaving a small bowl of vinegar near a window. While it may seem unusual, this simple household trick is often used to deal with fruit flies and unpleasant odors. Vinegar is inexpensive, easy to find, and can be useful when insects become more noticeable or certain smells linger indoors.
One of the most common uses is attracting fruit flies. Warm weather, ripe fruit, food scraps, and open windows can quickly bring these tiny insects inside. Apple cider vinegar works as a simple trap because its sweet, fermented smell attracts fruit flies. To make one, pour a small amount into a bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Make several tiny holes in the covering so the flies can enter but have difficulty getting back out.
Vinegar can also be used to help with household odors. Because it contains acetic acid, it may interact with some odor-causing compounds. A bowl of ordinary white vinegar can be placed near areas affected by cooking, garbage, or other unpleasant smells. However, it is not an air purifier and will not eliminate every odor.
For the method to work better, basic cleaning is still important. Remove food scraps, clean spills, store fruit properly, close garbage containers, and keep window screens in good condition. Apple cider vinegar is generally used for fruit flies, while white vinegar is more commonly chosen for odor control.
Safety is important as well. Never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals because dangerous fumes can form. Keep bowls away from children and pets. Ultimately, a bowl of vinegar by a window is simply a low-cost household trick that may help with common summer problems.
