For twelve years after my mother died, my father lived alone. Eventually, he joined a dating app and began meeting women again. The dates seemed to go well, but every woman suddenly stopped answering him the next morning. After the sixth woman disappeared, I asked my friend Rachel to meet Dad and tell me what she noticed. She said he was funny, respectful, and completely normal, so she agreed to see him again.
The next morning, Rachel sent me a frightening message and refused to explain until we met in person. She showed me anonymous messages containing a photograph of her leaving the restaurant with my father, her home address, workplace, and a private family secret. Someone had clearly been watching her. Dad checked his security footage and found a hooded person near his driveway that same night. When I saw the person’s distinctive white sneakers, I recognized them from an old family photograph. They belonged to Sabrina, my mother’s younger sister.
I confronted Sabrina, and she finally admitted that she had been following Dad’s dates and sending threatening messages to the women. She believed she was protecting my mother’s memory and thought Dad dating again was disrespectful. Rachel reported the messages, while Dad gave investigators the security footage. Sabrina accepted responsibility and agreed to counseling. Dad was devastated because he finally realized that the reason every woman had disappeared had never been him.
Months later, Dad met Jocelyn. Before dating her, he explained everything that had happened. Unlike the others, Jocelyn stayed. After their third date, Dad called me while music played softly in the background, and I heard him laughing in a way I hadn’t heard for years.
For the first time since my mother died, Dad understood that moving forward did not mean forgetting her. He could still love Mom while allowing himself to build a new life. He no longer had to remain alone simply because the past mattered to him.
