If you spot a pantry moth, don’t focus only on the adult moth flying around. The real problem is often hidden in dry foods, where larvae feed and develop. “The biggest mistake is treating only the adult moths you see flying around.” To break the life cycle, completely empty the affected cupboard and inspect every package for webbing, larvae, cocoons, clumped food, holes, or unusual residue. Pay special attention to flour, rice, cereal, pasta, nuts, seeds, spices, pet food, and birdseed, including older packages that have been sitting untouched.
Discard any food showing clear signs of infestation. Seal it in a trash bag and take it outside rather than leaving it indoors. Then thoroughly clean the pantry. Use a vacuum with a crevice attachment around shelf edges, corners, cracks, cabinet joints, screw holes, and behind shelves, because larvae may leave food and hide elsewhere before pupating. After vacuuming, wipe shelves and corners with warm, soapy water and allow everything to dry completely. Also inspect nearby cupboards and storage areas in case the infestation has spread.
Pheromone traps can help monitor adult male moth activity after cleaning, but they are not a complete solution. “They’re primarily a monitoring tool—not a complete infestation solution.” If moths continue appearing, keep searching for another contaminated food source or hidden larvae rather than assuming the problem is over.
For prevention, transfer flour, rice, cereal, grains, nuts, and similar foods into airtight glass or sturdy food-grade plastic containers. Rotate older foods toward the front, clean spills immediately, and inspect newly purchased dry goods before storing them. Avoid relying on mothballs, peppermint, bay leaves, or other scented products as the main treatment.
Finally, continue checking the pantry for several weeks. “The goal isn’t simply to have a moth-free afternoon. The goal is to interrupt the entire life cycle.” The simple routine is: inspect, clean, seal, rotate, and monitor. Once the source is removed and susceptible foods are stored securely, keeping pantry moths away becomes much easier.
