I have no idea what it is

While cleaning out an old drawer, I found a tiny brass object that looked almost like a miniature spoon. The scoop was far too small for food, while the long, thin handle had decorative raised rings. It looked old and carefully made, but I had no idea what it was for. “The more I looked at it, the more curious I became.” It clearly was not a toy, jewelry, or an ordinary kitchen tool.

After doing some research, I learned that it was most likely an old ear spoon, also called an ear pick. These small metal tools were once used for personal grooming. The tiny scoop was designed to remove wax from the outer part of the ear, while the long handle provided control. Similar tools were commonly found in older grooming sets and were made from materials such as brass or silver.

The tool had to be used carefully and only near the entrance of the ear rather than pushed deeply inside. Some similar small tools were also used for cleaning underneath fingernails. Their compact design made them useful for reaching small areas, which explains why they were often included with other personal-care items. Because these objects were made from metal, they could be cleaned and kept for many years.

There were other possible uses for tiny scoops as well. Some were used to handle small amounts of powder, medicine, herbs, or cosmetics. Still, based on the object’s size, shape, and curved scoop, a personal grooming purpose seems most likely. “Still, judging by the size, shape, and scoop at the end, the most likely answer is that it was a personal grooming tool, either an ear spoon or a nail-cleaning tool.”

Today, tools like this have mostly disappeared from everyday life. Modern personal-care products have replaced many of these simple metal implements. But finding one can still be fascinating because it offers a glimpse into how people once lived. “Sometimes the smallest things in an old drawer have the most surprising stories behind them.” It may not be valuable or rare, but it can still preserve a small piece of family history.
