Unlocking the Mystery Object: The Classic Rubber Squeeze Coin Purse

At first glance, this seamless bright-red oval object looks like a mystery. It might be mistaken for an earbud case, vintage makeup compact, fidget toy, or lens holder. In reality, it is a vintage rubber squeeze coin purse, historically known as a Quikey or Oval Squeeze Purse. Its unusual appearance hides a clever design that relies on simple physics rather than mechanical fasteners.

There are no zippers, snaps, buttons, or Velcro. Instead, a narrow slit runs along the center of the flexible rubber or vinyl body, staying tightly closed when the purse is not being used. To open it, the user simply squeezes both narrow ends with one hand. This pressure makes the flexible walls arch outward and widens the central slit, allowing coins or other small objects to be reached quickly.

When the pressure is released, the material naturally returns to its original shape. The slit closes again, creating a simple self-sealing mechanism. This combination of flexibility, simplicity, and convenience made the purse remarkably practical, especially during the decades when people regularly needed coins for public telephones, buses, parking meters, vending machines, and laundromats.

Squeeze coin purses became especially popular from the 1950s through the 1980s in North America and Europe. Banks, gas stations, insurance companies, and other businesses also used them as inexpensive promotional giveaways, often printing their names, logos, addresses, or telephone numbers on the colorful purses.

Although digital payments have reduced the need for loose change, these vintage purses can still be useful for storing coins, tokens, guitar picks, earbuds, cables, keys, or other tiny items. Today, they are also appreciated for their nostalgic appearance and ingenious opening mechanism, reflecting an era when everyday objects were often designed to be simple, durable, and practical.
