Silent Wipers, Hidden Reason

During freezing weather, many drivers leave their windshield wipers standing upright after parking. This simple habit is mainly intended to prevent the rubber blades from freezing to the glass, making it easier to remove snow and ice before driving. As the original article explains, “The goal is straightforward: preserve the blades that help keep the road visible when conditions turn dangerous.” In extremely hot weather, some drivers also lift the blades to reduce direct contact with a very hot windshield, although this offers limited protection from sunlight and heat.

Raising the wipers can be useful during winter, but it is not necessary for every vehicle or weather condition. Modern cars can have different wiper designs, and some require the blades to be placed in a special service position before they can safely be lifted. Drivers should check the vehicle’s owner’s manual if they are unsure about the correct procedure.

There is also a potential risk when leaving wipers upright. A raised wiper arm can accidentally fall or snap back against the windshield, possibly causing damage. For this reason, drivers should handle the arms carefully and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on them.

Most importantly, never try to operate windshield wipers when the blades are frozen to the glass. Ice should be removed first rather than forcing the wipers to move, which can damage the blades or mechanism. A little patience can prevent an expensive repair.

Ultimately, raised wipers can be a helpful winter precaution, but they are not a replacement for proper maintenance. Checking the condition of the rubber blades and replacing worn wipers when necessary remains one of the simplest ways to maintain clear visibility in difficult weather.
