Midnight Oil Mourns the Loss of Founding Drummer Rob Hirst at 70

Fans around the world are mourning the loss of Rob Hirst, the founding drummer and driving force behind Australia’s legendary rock band Midnight Oil. He has died at the age of 70 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. The band confirmed the news in an emotional tribute, sharing their heartbreak while honoring decades of friendship and music. Midnight Oil became a global force, selling more than 20 million albums, with Hirst’s powerful rhythm shaping their unmistakable sound.

Formed in Sydney in 1972, Midnight Oil stood apart for music that aimed to say something meaningful rather than simply chase radio success. Over time, they became one of Australia’s most respected bands, earning multiple ARIA Awards and a place in the ARIA Hall of Fame. While widely known for his energy behind the drum kit, Hirst was also deeply involved in the band’s creative process.

He contributed to the foundation of iconic songs such as “Beds Are Burning,” “Blue Sky Mine,” and “The Dead Heart,” tracks that blended strong melodies with themes of justice, identity, and the environment. These songs helped the band gain worldwide recognition.

After stepping away in the early 2000s, Midnight Oil reunited in 2016. Their final album, Resist, was released in 2022, followed by a farewell tour that marked the end of an era. Outside the band, Hirst explored solo work and later collaborated musically with his daughter.

Following his passing, tributes have poured in from fans and fellow musicians. As the band shared, the loss cannot be put fully into words, but the music will always remain.
