US Embassy Hit by Missile as Trump Claims American Forces ‘Obliterated’ Iranian Military Targets

A missile struck the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad late Friday night, escalating tensions in the Middle East. The projectile landed inside the heavily fortified Green Zone, an area that houses government offices and diplomatic missions. Reports say the missile broke through several security layers before hitting near the large American diplomatic complex. Videos online showed smoke rising above the site after the blast, though early reports did not confirm casualties. Iraqi security forces quickly secured the area as officials warned the strike could signal a serious escalation in the conflict involving the United States and Iran-aligned groups.

The attack happened only hours after President Donald Trump said U.S. forces had carried out a major bombing operation against Iran. Posting online, he claimed American forces had “obliterated every military target” during a strike on Kharg Island. The island is a crucial hub for Iran’s oil exports and sits about 16 miles off the country’s southern coast. Trump said the attack targeted military facilities but avoided damaging oil infrastructure, calling it a sign of restraint.

However, he warned that the situation could change if Iran or its allies interfered with international shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints. The warning highlighted how quickly the conflict could expand beyond direct military strikes.

The confrontation is part of a broader U.S. campaign called Operation Epic Fury, which targets Iranian military capabilities and allied militia groups in the region. The campaign has already triggered retaliation, including drone and missile attacks on American bases and diplomatic locations across Iraq. Before the embassy strike, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad had issued a security alert warning Americans about rising threats from Iran-backed militias and advising citizens to remain cautious.

Political developments inside Iran have also intensified the situation. After the death of longtime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei earlier in the conflict, leadership passed to his son Mojtaba Khamenei. In his first major speech, he promised revenge and said Iran would not allow attacks against the country to go unanswered.

Trump responded with strong remarks defending the military campaign. He stated that Iranian forces had been heavily damaged and said the United States maintained overwhelming military power. As missile strikes now reach diplomatic compounds, many analysts fear the confrontation could grow into a wider regional conflict.
