Oscars Slammed for ‘Rude’ Move as K-Pop Group Demon Hunters Makes History With Win

The 98th Academy Awards became memorable not only for major wins but also for a controversy that sparked debate online. One of the biggest moments of the night was the success of the animated film KPop Demon Hunters, which won Best Animated Feature. Its hit song Golden also received the Oscar for Best Original Song, marking a historic moment for K-pop representation in Hollywood.

The film had already become a global success after its release on Netflix, with millions of streams and strong chart performance. Fans celebrated the achievement of the fictional group HUNTR/X, seeing it as a milestone for international music in a traditionally Western-dominated awards ceremony.

During the acceptance speeches, co-director Maggie Kang delivered an emotional message about representation. She told the audience: “For those of you who look like me, I’m so sorry that it took so long to see us in a movie like this, but it is here.” Her words were praised for highlighting the importance of visibility for Korean creators and audiences worldwide.

However, the celebration quickly turned controversial. When singer EJAE and producer Lee Yu-han began speaking about the Best Original Song win, the orchestra music started and the broadcast moved to a commercial break before they finished. The interruption sparked strong reactions on social media, with viewers complaining that the winners were cut off during a historic moment.

Backstage, the team continued their speeches and thanked collaborators who helped create the project. EJAE expressed gratitude for the collective effort behind the film and song, saying, “We feel very grateful and very honored.” She also mentioned fellow artists who contributed but were not acknowledged on stage because of the sudden cut.

The incident added to ongoing discussions about representation and fairness at major award ceremonies. While the wins for *KPop Demon Hunters* showed growing recognition of international artists, the interrupted speeches reminded audiences that important cultural milestones can still clash with strict broadcast schedules and commercial priorities.
