Senate Confirms New SMDC Commanding General

John L. Rafferty Jr. has been confirmed by the United States Senate for promotion to lieutenant general and will take command of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command. The promotion marks a major step in a military career that spans more than three decades. In his new role, Rafferty will help lead the Army’s efforts to strengthen missile defense systems and expand space-based security capabilities.

Rafferty currently serves as chief of staff at United States European Command in Germany. During more than 33 years of service, he has gained extensive experience in field artillery operations and senior leadership positions. His career combines operational command with strategic planning, making him a key figure in the Army’s evolving defense strategy.

Among his notable roles, Rafferty previously served as commanding general of the 56th Artillery Command for U.S. Army Europe-Africa in Germany. He was also chief of Army Public Affairs in Washington, D.C. and director of the Long Range Precision Fires Cross Functional Team at Fort Sill. Other assignments include executive officer to the director of the Army Staff and commander of the 18th Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Bragg.

Throughout his career, Rafferty has supported several major U.S. military operations, including Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Spartan Shield, and Operation Inherent Resolve. This operational experience has helped shape his reputation as a leader capable of handling complex defense challenges.

Rafferty will succeed Sean A. Gainey, who is retiring after more than 35 years of military service. The leadership transition comes at a time when missile defense and space technology are becoming increasingly important to national security.

His confirmation also occurred during a broader round of Senate approvals for nominees from Donald Trump’s administration. Lawmakers confirmed numerous appointments this year, reflecting continued efforts to fill leadership roles across the government while addressing evolving security priorities.
