Baggage Handlers Explain Why Tying a Ribbon to Your Luggage Is a Big Mistake

Travelers often use tricks like tying colorful ribbons or scarves to their suitcases to make them easier to spot at baggage carousels. “One common tip is tying a colorful ribbon, scarf, or tag to a suitcase so it stands out among dozens of similar bags.” While practical, airport staff warn this can cause problems.

Modern airports rely on automated systems that scan barcodes and move luggage through conveyors. Decorations can interfere with scanners or get caught in machinery. “If a barcode cannot be read properly, the suitcase may need manual inspection, slowing the process and increasing the chance of delays.” Removing old airline stickers and labels is also advised, as they may confuse the system.

Certain dense food items, like marzipan, may trigger extra security checks. While allowed, these items can slow your journey.

Handlers suggest sending suitcases onto conveyors wheels-up to protect them from damage.

Instead of adding ribbons, experts recommend using luggage with distinctive colors, patterns, or built-in identifiers. This makes it easier to spot your bag while keeping airport systems running smoothly.
