Maggie never planned to use a pretend boyfriend to get revenge. She only wanted to survive a family holiday gathering where her ex-husband Ryan would appear with the woman he left her for. After years of feeling judged and invisible, she hired Daniel, a stranger, to accompany her and give her confidence for one difficult afternoon.
When Daniel arrived, Maggie immediately felt insecure. She apologized for her appearance, her old dress, and even the chaos caused by her children. Daniel noticed something unusual: she apologized constantly, even when she had done nothing wrong. Instead of judging her, he treated her with kindness and patience.
The reason Maggie felt so broken was because of Ryan’s cruel comments after their divorce. He had told her, “You’re not the woman I married. You used to be slim. Now you’re just not attractive enough for me anymore.” Since then, she had watched him proudly show off his new partner, Lucille, while she struggled with her confidence.
At the family pool party, Ryan mocked Daniel and assumed he was fake. When he said Maggie must have paid him to come, Daniel calmly defended her, saying, “Does the ex-husband package include humiliating the mother of your children in front of them, or do you do that for free?”
Later, during the family photo, Maggie tried to step away from the center as she always did. Daniel stopped her and asked why everyone else’s comfort mattered more than hers. He pointed out that she apologized for everything, including things that were not her fault.
His words made everyone realize how much Maggie had changed over the years. Even Lucille began questioning her relationship with Ryan after recognizing the same behavior.
For the first time in years, Maggie sat proudly in the family photo without apologizing. She finally understood that she deserved to take up space and be valued.
