Shoppers Are Surprised by the True Purpose of Shopping Cart Hooks

For years, many shoppers have pushed supermarket carts without realizing that a small feature on the handle has a useful purpose. The little hook attached to many shopping trolleys may look unimportant, but it can make grocery trips much easier.

A video shared by Woolworths Australia revealed what they call a simple “trolley hack” involving the hidden function of the courtesy hook. Instead of placing handbags, purses, or reusable shopping bags inside the cart and losing valuable space for groceries, shoppers can hang them securely from the hook.

This small trick can help keep the cart more organized and reduce the need to carry heavy bags on your shoulder while walking through the store. It also makes it easier to separate personal belongings from groceries and keeps everything within reach.

“The ‘courtesy hook’” may seem like a minor detail, but it shows how everyday designs often include helpful features that people overlook. A simple change in how we use the trolley can make shopping more convenient and less stressful.

Many shoppers spend years using carts without noticing these hidden details. Sometimes, the smallest features are designed to solve common problems—we just need to know where to look.
