Major trucking company collapses after 35 years in business leaving furious customers in limbo: ‘This is a disaster’

A major transportation company that served customers for more than three decades has officially shut down, leaving employees without jobs and businesses scrambling to recover delayed shipments. After approximately **35 years in operation**, **XL Express** entered voluntary administration in late June 2025 before later being placed into liquidation, marking another difficult chapter for the freight industry.

The sudden closure created immediate disruption across Australia as customers discovered their freight was stranded in company depots. Many businesses were unable to retrieve important deliveries or receive clear information about when, or if, their shipments would arrive. One frustrated customer described the situation simply as **“a disaster,”** reflecting the uncertainty faced by companies that depended on the carrier’s services. Administrators later began coordinating the release of freight wherever possible, but the process proved challenging for many affected clients.

The collapse also had a significant impact on the company’s workforce. Around **200 employees** lost their jobs after operations came to an abrupt halt, while creditors were left facing millions of dollars in unpaid debts. Reports indicated the company owed roughly **AU$42 million**, highlighting the scale of its financial difficulties after years in business.

Industry experts say the company’s downfall reflects broader challenges affecting the trucking sector. Rising fuel prices, higher insurance costs, inflation, and weaker freight demand have placed increasing financial pressure on transport companies, forcing several long-established businesses to close or restructure in recent years. While XL Express had built a strong reputation over decades of service, those economic pressures ultimately proved too difficult to overcome.

The closure serves as another reminder of how quickly financial struggles can affect even well-established companies. For customers still waiting on shipments and employees searching for new opportunities, the company’s collapse has become a lasting example of the difficulties facing today’s freight industry.
