For this reason, it is beneficial to drink water on an empty stomach.

Drinking water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach is a popular health habit, with many claims that it can “detox” the body, boost metabolism, and improve overall health. While some of these claims are exaggerated, science does support several real benefits of starting the day hydrated.

After several hours of sleep, the body naturally loses water through breathing, sweating, and normal processes. Drinking one or two glasses of water after waking can help restore hydration levels, which may improve energy, focus, and alertness. Even mild dehydration can contribute to tiredness, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.

Water can also support digestion by helping the stomach and intestines function properly. Some research suggests that warm water in the morning may help improve bowel regularity, especially for people who struggle with constipation. It is not a cure, but it can be a simple habit that supports digestive health.

Another common claim is that morning water boosts metabolism. Studies have shown that drinking around 500 ml of water can temporarily increase metabolic rate, but the effect is small. It may burn only a limited number of extra calories, meaning it is a helpful habit—not a weight-loss solution.

“Thirst and hunger signals originate from similar pathways in the brain, and they’re easily confused.” Drinking water before breakfast may help you recognize whether you are truly hungry or simply dehydrated, reducing unnecessary snacking.

However, some popular beliefs are not backed by strong evidence. Morning water does not “flush toxins” or magically improve skin, immunity, or prevent disease. The liver and kidneys already handle detoxification naturally, and hydration simply helps them work properly.

The best approach is simple: drink 1–2 cups of water within 30–60 minutes of waking, and drink an amount that feels comfortable. “Water isn’t a cure—it’s a foundation.” It is a small daily habit that can support hydration, digestion, and a healthier start to the day.
