This TV Star Was Called ‘Dumb’ by Parents & Could Barely Read until Age 31 When He Learned of His Disorder by Chance

Henry Winkler became one of television’s most beloved stars, but his path to success was filled with challenges. Born in Manhattan to parents who had escaped Nazi Germany, he grew up in a home with little warmth or encouragement. He later admitted that he “struggled to understand how other children could enjoy spending time with their families” because that was not something he experienced. Despite those hardships, he refused to let his childhood shape the rest of his life.

As a child, Winkler struggled with severe reading difficulties caused by undiagnosed dyslexia. Instead of receiving support, he was often labeled “lazy or unintelligent,” which affected his confidence. Even so, he remained determined, applying to 28 colleges and earning acceptance into two, proving his resilience and willingness to keep moving forward despite repeated setbacks.

At age 31, while his stepson was being tested for dyslexia, Winkler finally realized the condition had been the source of his lifelong struggles. The discovery helped him better understand himself, and he developed practical ways to overcome his challenges, including memorizing scripts and using humor to hide his reading difficulties during auditions.

After *Happy Days* ended, Winkler faced years without major acting roles, but he successfully reinvented himself as a producer and helped create the original *MacGyver*. He later returned to acting with acclaimed roles in projects such as *Arrested Development*, showing that his career could evolve even after difficult periods.

Along with his professional achievements, Winkler built a lasting family life with his wife, Stacey Weitzman. His journey is a powerful reminder that early struggles and learning disabilities do not have to determine a person’s future, and that determination and perseverance can lead to lasting success.
