The Right Way to Use Your Washing Machine’s Detergent Drawer

Many people use their washing machine several times a week but are surprised when clothes come out smelling unpleasant or covered with detergent residue. The problem is often not the detergent or the machine itself, but a hidden area that is easily ignored: the detergent drawer.

Over time, leftover soap, fabric softener, minerals, and moisture can collect inside the drawer. This buildup can block water flow and prevent cleaning products from being released properly. It can also create a place for mold and mildew to grow, causing bad odors that transfer to freshly washed clothes.

A dirty detergent drawer can quietly affect washing performance. Regular cleaning helps prevent smells and keeps the machine working more effectively. “Cleaning it regularly helps maintain better washing performance and keeps odors away.”

The cleaning process is simple and only takes a few minutes. Remove the drawer according to the machine’s instructions, rinse it with warm water, and scrub hard-to-reach areas with a soft brush or an old toothbrush. The space where the drawer sits should also be wiped because detergent and moisture can build up there as well.

Using the correct compartments and the right amount of detergent is also important. Most washing machines have separate sections for main detergent, pre-wash, and fabric softener. Too much detergent can leave extra residue inside the machine and on clothes.

Small habits can protect your appliance for years. Leaving the door and detergent drawer slightly open after each wash allows moisture to escape, while occasional maintenance cycles help remove hidden buildup.

A cleaner drawer, proper detergent use, and basic care can make a noticeable difference. This simple routine requires little effort but can improve washing results and help your machine stay efficient for longer.
