The Terrifying Truth Behind What Flight Attendants Do With Their Hands During Takeoff

Imagine looking out an airplane window without realizing that, during takeoff and landing, flight attendants are preparing for a possible emergency. Their unusual posture—seatbelt fastened, body upright, feet flat, thumbs tucked, and hands placed under their thighs—is not simply a habit. It is known as the “bracing position,” and it is designed to help reduce injuries during a sudden impact.

Flight attendant Henny Lim of Cebu Pacific recently explained this procedure in a viral post, giving passengers a closer look at what happens behind the scenes. She explained that every part of the position has a purpose. Keeping the body firmly positioned can reduce uncontrolled movement during a sudden stop, while keeping the feet flat helps provide stability. The goal is to limit the chance of passengers or crew members striking parts of the cabin during an emergency.

The preparation does not stop with the physical position. During takeoff and landing, flight attendants also perform what is known as the “silent review.” They mentally go through emergency procedures, including evacuation commands, exit locations, door operation, and the position of important safety equipment. They also remain alert to anything outside the aircraft that could signal a potential problem.

This is why the role of a flight attendant goes far beyond serving food and drinks. They are trained safety professionals whose responsibilities become especially important during an emergency. Their preparation allows them to react quickly and help passengers evacuate safely if something goes wrong.

These behind-the-scenes routines may seem strange to travelers, but they are carefully designed parts of aviation safety. As Lim’s explanation shows, even a simple posture can have an important purpose. The next time you see a flight attendant sitting quietly during takeoff or landing, remember that they may be mentally preparing for situations passengers never have to think about.
