Why Heinz Ketchup Bottles Display the Number 57: The Surprising Story Behind a Marketing Legend

Long before digital marketing, Henry J. Heinz understood something that businesses still rely on today: people remember simple, distinctive ideas. His famous “57 Varieties” slogan became one of the most recognizable branding concepts in history, even though the number was never meant to be an exact count of Heinz products.

The story dates back to 1896, when Heinz was traveling by train and noticed an advertisement promoting “21 styles” of shoes. The number caught his attention and made him think about why certain numbers are easier to remember than others. At the time, Heinz’s company actually offered more than 57 products, but accuracy was not the main goal. He wanted a phrase that would stick in customers’ minds.

The number 57 was reportedly chosen because five was Heinz’s lucky number, while seven was favored by his wife. Together, they created a number that sounded unusual and memorable. Unlike round numbers such as 50 or 100, 57 felt specific and intentional. Paired with the words “Varieties,” it suggested that customers had plenty of choices without requiring a long explanation.

The slogan eventually became much more than a description of products. It became closely connected with the Heinz name, helping consumers associate the brand with variety, familiarity, and reliability. Its simplicity made it easy to recognize and repeat, while consistent product quality helped strengthen the message.

More than a century later, “57 Varieties” remains a powerful example of effective branding. Its success shows that marketing does not always depend on complicated strategies or precise statistics. Sometimes, a simple idea that captures attention and stays in people’s memories can become far more valuable than a perfectly accurate statement.
