What It Means If You See These Holes in Tomatoes

Finding a hole in a ripe tomato can be frustrating, but it usually does not mean your entire garden is in trouble. Several common garden visitors can cause this damage. Tomato fruitworms may leave small, round holes, often near the stem, while larger tomato hornworms can create bigger, uneven holes and also damage the leaves. Birds, squirrels, and chipmunks may peck at ripening tomatoes, while slugs and snails can leave ragged holes along with their familiar slime trails. As the original article says, “A hole in a tomato does not mean the whole plant is doomed.”

The best response is simple observation rather than panic. Check the plant and the fruit carefully to identify what is causing the damage. If only a small part of the tomato is affected, you usually do not need to throw the entire fruit away. The damaged section can be cut away generously, leaving the remaining tomato for eating or cooking. Larger pests, such as hornworms, can be removed by hand while wearing garden gloves.

Natural garden habits can also help reduce pest problems. Planting marigolds or basil near tomatoes may help discourage some unwanted visitors, while regularly checking plants makes it easier to catch problems early. Keeping the garden clean and paying attention to nighttime activity can also help identify slugs and snails.

Most importantly, a damaged tomato is simply part of growing food in nature. “Inspect, Don’t Panic” is a useful rule for gardeners. A few holes do not automatically mean a failed harvest, and small amounts of pest damage are often manageable with simple steps. With regular observation and gentle care, you can protect your plants while still enjoying the satisfaction of growing your own food.
