If You’re Bitten by a Snake, Here’s What to Do and What to Avoid

A snakebite can be terrifying, but the first few minutes are critical. **“Panic and wrong actions often cause more harm than the bite itself.”** Move away from the snake immediately and do not try to catch, kill, or identify it. Stay calm and keep movement to a minimum, because activity can help venom spread faster. Sit or lie down and keep the bitten limb still.

Call emergency services or get to a hospital as quickly as possible. Serious snakebites may require antivenom, so medical treatment should not be delayed. Remove rings, watches, shoes, or tight clothing near the bite before swelling develops. Gently clean the area and cover it with a loose, clean bandage.

Keep the affected limb supported and as still as possible. A splint can help prevent unnecessary movement while waiting for medical assistance. **“The goal is to slow the spread of venom until medical help arrives.”** If possible, remember what the snake looked like from a safe distance, but never risk another bite trying to identify it.

Knowing what not to do is equally important. Never cut the wound or attempt to suck out venom, as these methods do not remove the poison and may cause additional injury. Do not apply a tourniquet, ice, alcohol, or caffeine, which can worsen tissue damage or complicate treatment.

Most importantly, do not wait for symptoms to appear. Even a bite that initially looks harmless can become serious. **“Every snakebite should be treated as a medical emergency.”** Staying calm, limiting movement, and getting professional medical help quickly can make a major difference.
