They Cut My Grandfather’s Tree for Their Million-Dollar Entrance — So I Made Them Pay $75,000 a Year to Use It

For fourteen years, I had quietly paid for the subdivision’s private road as a courtesy. Corrine eventually treated that kindness as a permanent right. I showed several reasonable HOA residents the receipts, and Lorraine apologized for supporting her while Francis promised to help. Corrine responded by hiring contractors to widen the road, but they dumped fill beside Clearwater Creek. I documented the damage, reported it, and officials stopped the work because of the environmental violations.

Corrine then tried another strategy: she asked the state to declare my private road public. My attorney, Delilah, challenged the filing with fourteen years of payment records, and the state rejected Corrine’s request. Still, she continued fighting, convinced that expensive legal action could force me to give up.

Then I told Wyatt about my grandfather’s 1932 promise and my late wife’s Nez Perce ancestry. I had always wanted to help return land to her people. The Wallowa Homeland Project needed land for a bison herd and youth cultural camp, so I decided to sell 2,260 acres of my 2,300-acre ranch to the Nez Perce Tribe.

For sixty-one days, we kept the deal secret. On the sixty-first morning, Wyatt and I went to the courthouse, where I signed the land over to the tribe and kept forty acres around my home. The tribe immediately notified the HOA about its unauthorized use of the road.

Corrine was stunned and called emergency meetings, but Francis revealed the truth about the road payments, environmental damage, and failed legal attempts. Most homeowners chose negotiation. The tribe offered the HOA a permanent road license with strict conditions: $75,000 a year for the tribal youth fund, $137,000 for creek restoration, and removal of Corrine’s monument. Corrine resigned soon afterward, and Francis became president. I kept my forty acres, while bison now graze across the meadow where my grandfather once walked. The gate remains unlocked, and the land finally has a future Corrine can no longer control.
