Try These Hacks When Your Key Fob Stops Working

Walking up to your car, pressing the key fob, and getting no response can be frustrating, but it does not always mean something is seriously wrong. If the doors stay locked and the lights do not flash, the problem is often a weak or dead fob battery. Instead of panicking, there are several simple tricks that may help you get back into your vehicle.

Most modern key fobs contain a hidden mechanical key. Look for a small release button or slider on the side or back, then remove the metal key and use it to unlock the driver’s door manually. If the battery is only weak, you can also try the famous “chin trick.” Hold the fob close to your chin while pressing the button. The human body can sometimes help extend the signal enough for the vehicle to recognize it.

If you manage to get inside but the car refuses to start, there may still be a solution. Many push-button vehicles contain an RFID chip in the fob that can work even when the battery is dead. Try holding the fob directly against the start button or the location specified in your owner’s manual while pressing the brake and start button.

The best way to avoid being stranded is to stay prepared. Keep a spare coin-cell battery, such as a CR2032 when appropriate for your vehicle, and avoid leaving the fob in extreme temperatures. A bright keychain can also make it easier to find, while your owner’s manual will explain the exact emergency procedures for your car.

The next time your key fob suddenly stops working, remember: **“letting a stubborn piece of plastic spike our stress is the absolute last thing our bodies need.”** Take a breath, try the manual key or emergency start procedure, and handle the problem calmly.
