Is It Fine to Leave Your Range Hood Lights On Overnight ?

It started with something ordinary: I had accidentally left the range hood light on overnight. The next evening, I checked it carefully. The bulb looked normal, the switch worked, and there was no unusual smell or heat. I even replaced the old bulb with a manufacturer-approved LED. Everything seemed safe.

At 2:13 a.m., I woke up to a strange smell and went downstairs. The hood light was glowing, and something beneath it appeared to be moving. I heard scratching and discovered tiny black marks around the electrical wiring inside the cabinet. My husband came downstairs, took one look, and said, “Don’t touch anything.” We shut off the kitchen circuit and called an electrician.

The electrician inspected the hood and quickly told us, “You were lucky.” The problem wasn’t the light itself. The wiring behind it had become extremely hot because a previous bulb had been replaced with a higher-wattage one. The heat had damaged the insulation, and another wire had even begun to melt.

The strange movement wasn’t an animal. It was damaged insulation shifting because of airflow from the hood. The electrician warned us that continued use could eventually have caused an electrical fire. We replaced the damaged wiring, installed the correct LED module, and thoroughly checked the hood.

That experience changed how I think about everyday appliances. The light staying on overnight wasn’t the real danger—the hidden electrical fault was. Warning signs such as unusual heat, burning smells, discoloration, flickering, damaged wiring, or repeated bulb failures shouldn’t be ignored. I also learned that using the correct bulb matters. A fixture designed for a cool LED shouldn’t be fitted with a hotter, higher-wattage bulb simply for extra brightness.

Sometimes safety means nothing more complicated than paying attention to small problems before they become serious ones.
