Though socially awkward, the behavior is common. Men of different ages admit they often do it automatically. Online discussions, including Reddit’s AskMen, show many describe it as unconscious. Explanations range from warmth and relaxation to simple reassurance. Most agree it’s about personal comfort—not exhibitionism.
Therapists support this view. Psychotherapist Lisa Spitz told Cosmopolitan the habit can function as self-soothing. Rather than being sexual, it may calm the nervous system and provide a subtle sense of security. Repetitive, nonsexual touch can help the body relax without conscious intent.
Dr. Babak Ashrafi, a sexual health specialist, explained that repetitive, nonsexual touch may trigger oxytocin, a hormone linked to relaxation and stress relief. Practical reasons also matter: tight clothing, shifting underwear, heat, or mild irritation can lead to automatic adjustments. However, ongoing discomfort may require medical attention.
There may also be a protective instinct involved. Body-language expert Vanessa Van Edwards noted that men sometimes subconsciously shield the groin to guard a vulnerable area. In most cases, placing a hand inside the pants is “neither sexual nor intentional—it’s a blend of habit, comfort, and subconscious self-regulation.” While social etiquette remains important, understanding the reasons behind the gesture helps replace judgment with context.
