Olympic speed skater rushed to hospital after opponent’s blade slices her face in horror injury

An illegal move during the women’s 1500-meter short-track speed skating quarterfinal at the 2026 Winter Olympics led to one of the most alarming moments of the Games. Poland’s Kamila Sellier was knocked down after contact involving Team USA’s Kristen Santos-Griswold during what officials ruled an illegal lane pass.

The incident began when Santos-Griswold lost balance while attempting the pass. The fall quickly turned into a chain reaction, bringing down Italy’s decorated skater Arianna Fontana along with Santos-Griswold herself. What started as a competitive heat suddenly became a dangerous pile-up on the ice.

As the skaters crashed, Sellier suffered a serious facial injury after contact with a skate blade. The mood inside the arena changed instantly from excitement to concern. Officials stopped the race as medical teams rushed out to treat the athletes. Broadcast footage showed the tense aftermath, with spectators and commentators reacting in shock.

Judges later reviewed the play and confirmed that Santos-Griswold had broken passing rules. She was penalized and disqualified from advancing to the semifinals. The decision reinforced how strictly rules are enforced in such a fast and technical sport.

Medical staff treated Sellier on the ice before helping her off for further evaluation. Later updates confirmed she was receiving professional care. The crash was a powerful reminder of the dangers in short-track skating—where “high speeds, tight corners, and close racing” mean even a small mistake can have serious consequences.
