Mara was immediately drawn to the old house, built in 1934 and surrounded by ancient trees. Its faded brick walls, cracked windows, peeling paint, and overgrown garden explained the surprisingly low price. Instead of seeing the damage as a warning, Mara saw an opportunity. She used her savings to buy the property, hoping to restore its wooden staircase, stained glass, and forgotten rooms.
While cleaning the dusty attic one rainy afternoon, Mara discovered a small door hidden behind a loose wooden panel. It opened with a long creak, revealing a narrow staircase leading into darkness. At the bottom was a forgotten room containing an old desk and a leather-bound journal. The journal belonged to Elias Hart, the original owner of the house, whose early entries described family life before becoming increasingly disturbing.
Elias wrote about strange footsteps at night, mysterious lights beneath the floorboards, and letters from someone who seemed to know the house’s secrets. Mara continued reading until she reached his final entry, written three days before he disappeared. The message made her blood run cold: “If anyone finds this, do not trust the person who tells you this house is empty.”
Below the warning was a rough drawing of the basement, with one section marked in red. Before Mara could understand what it meant, she heard footsteps above her. They stopped directly over the hidden room, followed by three slow knocks on the floor. She switched off her flashlight and stood completely still.
Then the wooden panel behind her suddenly began to move. Someone on the other side was opening it.
