**8 things you should never put in the dishwasher** (and why)

A dishwasher makes kitchen cleanup much easier, but not every item should go inside. High temperatures, strong detergents, and powerful water jets can damage certain cookware and utensils. Before washing anything, always check the manufacturer’s instructions. If an item is labeled **“hand wash only,”** it’s best to follow that advice to keep it in good condition.

Sharp knives and wooden utensils are better cleaned by hand. Dishwashers can dull knife blades as they hit other utensils, while wooden handles, spoons, and cutting boards may absorb water, causing them to crack, warp, or fade. To extend their lifespan, wash them with warm, soapy water, dry them immediately, and occasionally apply food-grade mineral oil to wooden surfaces.

Delicate crystal glasses, fine china, and cast iron cookware also need special care. Crystal and porcelain can chip, break, or become cloudy in the dishwasher, while decorative finishes may wear away. Cast iron loses its protective seasoning when exposed to dishwasher detergent, making it more likely to rust. Gentle hand washing and thorough drying are the safest options for these items.

Nonstick pans should also stay out of the dishwasher because repeated wash cycles can slowly wear down the nonstick coating. Washing them with a soft sponge and mild dish soap helps preserve their surface. It’s also recommended to let the pan cool before cleaning to reduce the chance of warping.

Finally, avoid putting jars or containers with adhesive labels and many insulated travel mugs or thermoses in the dishwasher. Heat and water can loosen labels, leaving sticky residue and even clogging the filter. For insulated mugs, excessive heat may damage the vacuum seal, reducing their ability to keep drinks hot or cold. Following these simple habits helps protect both your cookware and your dishwasher.
