A Familiar Tex-Mex Name Is Trying Again-

Some restaurant names bring back much more than memories. For many Americans, Chi-Chi’s is one of those names, reminding them of family dinners, chips and salsa, sizzling plates, and special nights out. After disappearing from the U.S. restaurant scene for roughly two decades, the Mexican casual-dining chain officially returned in 2025 with a flagship location in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. The big question is whether nostalgia can make the old brand relevant again.

Chi-Chi’s was founded in Minnesota in 1975 by Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee. At its peak, the chain had more than 200 locations. The revived restaurant is now led by Marno’s son, Michael McDermott, who has kept familiar favorites such as chimichangas, Nachos Grande, seafood enchiladas, and fried ice cream while giving the restaurant a more modern look.

For longtime customers, the familiar menu and name provide an advantage, but nostalgia alone cannot guarantee success. Today’s diners have countless Mexican and Tex-Mex choices and can instantly compare restaurants through online reviews. Food quality, service, value, and consistency will determine whether people come back after their first nostalgic visit.

The comeback also carries a difficult history. Chi-Chi’s struggled financially before closing its final U.S. restaurants in 2004 following bankruptcy and a devastating 2003 hepatitis A outbreak connected to contaminated green onions at a Pennsylvania location. That past makes rebuilding customer trust especially important.

For now, the St. Louis Park restaurant remains the company’s only open location, making it a test for the brand’s future. “Nostalgia brought the name back.” But whether Chi-Chi’s becomes a successful chain again will depend on more than memories. “What happens next will depend on what’s actually served at the table.”
