A man was detained after allegedly contacting a family member during the Nancy Guthrie investigation

During the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, authorities revealed the arrest of a California man accused of sending “alarming and misleading messages” to her family. Court records state that Derrick Callella contacted relatives with texts referencing bitcoin shortly after the family made a public plea for help. The messages suggested Nancy “might have been abducted,” deepening fear and confusion at a moment of extreme vulnerability. Although investigators later confirmed the messages were unrelated to her disappearance, the emotional damage was immediate.

Family members quickly contacted law enforcement, allowing investigators to trace the phone number and stop further communication. Prosecutors say Callella also placed a brief phone call to another relative, intensifying concerns of possible extortion. Officers reported that he admitted following news coverage of the case and searching online for the family’s contact information. While he claimed he only wanted to see if they would respond, authorities stressed that communications implying ransom can cause severe harm.

Callella now faces federal charges for transmitting messages that falsely suggested a ransom scenario. Officials emphasized that even without a demand for money, such implications can “provoke fear and disrupt an active investigation.” Law enforcement also clarified there is “no evidence linking him” to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance itself.

Investigators remain focused on uncovering what happened to Nancy in Arizona. Evidence found at her home led authorities to classify the case as a criminal investigation rather than a routine missing-person search. Her phone and vehicle were reportedly left behind, details officials say are inconsistent with a voluntary departure. Given her age, limited mobility, and medical needs, detectives are carefully reviewing timelines, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence.

Throughout the ordeal, Nancy’s children have urged compassion and responsible sharing of information, asking the public to avoid speculation and rumors. Authorities continue to review tips and follow credible leads, emphasizing that accuracy and cooperation are essential as the search for answers continues.
