A Single Carpenter Fought to Keep Five Siblings Together — Then the Judge Learned His Secret

The courtroom fell silent as officials announced that five young siblings would be split up and sent to different counties. Six-year-old Eli hugged his little sister while the twins held each other’s hands, terrified of being separated. Just weeks earlier, I had been a single carpenter with no children, but after seeing the siblings on an emergency placement list, I knew I had to try to keep them together. I spent my savings preparing my home, building bunk beds, buying car seats, and making sure everything was ready for them.

Although my house passed every inspection, the state argued I lacked the experience to care for five children alone. When the judge questioned me, I revealed the reason behind my determination. As a child, I had stood in that same courthouse after losing my parents, where my own brothers and sisters were separated. We promised to reunite, but two of my siblings were lost from my life forever. I refused to let another family suffer the same fate.

The courtroom listened as I explained my preparations. My finances were stable, my business could support the children, and every bedroom, appointment, and safety requirement had been completed. Everything I had done was focused on one goal—keeping the siblings together.

The judge then asked Eli what he wanted most. His quiet reply, **“I just want us to stay together,”** spoke louder than any legal argument. After reviewing the reports and plans, the judge rejected the request to separate the children and granted me temporary custody while the adoption process continued.

Before the paperwork was finished, Lila and the other children rushed into my arms. On the drive home, Eli looked at me and softly asked, **“Is this really our new family?”** I smiled and said yes. I couldn’t undo the heartbreak of my own childhood, but I had finally helped keep another family together.
