Boiling Eggshells: How to Use Them for Gardening, Cleaning, and More

Eggshells are more useful than they may seem. Instead of immediately throwing them away, you can reuse them around the home and garden. They contain calcium and can be crushed, stored, and used in several simple ways, helping reduce household waste.

Before using them, rinse the shells well to remove any remaining egg. For extra cleanliness, boil them for a few minutes, then let them dry completely. Once dry, keep them in a clean container until you are ready to crush or grind them.

In the garden, crushed eggshells can be added to compost, where they slowly break down and contribute minerals. Finely ground shells can also be mixed into soil, although they work gradually rather than as a quick fertilizer. Coarsely crushed shells are sometimes placed around plants to discourage slugs, though they should not be considered a guaranteed pest solution. Another option is using clean shell halves as small seed starters. When transplanting, crack the shell so the roots have room to grow.

Eggshells can also be useful for cleaning. When crushed and mixed with warm, soapy water, they provide mild abrasion that can help scrub durable pots and pans. Avoid using them on delicate or easily scratched surfaces.

Eggshells are not a miracle solution, but they can still have a second life. As the original article puts it, **“Something that would normally go directly into the bin can sometimes serve one more purpose first.”** A little care and creativity can turn an everyday kitchen leftover into something modestly useful.
