Can You Solve This Tricky Viral Math Problem?

A simple-looking math puzzle became an internet sensation after thousands of people struggled to find the correct answer. The challenge gained attention after researchers in Japan reportedly discovered that only 60 percent of people in their 20s who attempted the problem solved it correctly. What seemed like an easy calculation quickly turned into a test of attention and understanding of basic math rules.

Many people believed they had the answer right, but the puzzle was designed with hidden traps. Some followed the usual order of operations known as PEMDAS, which means “Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.” However, applying it in the usual way led many solvers to the wrong result.

Another common mistake came from the fraction part of the problem. People interpreted “one third” incorrectly and treated it differently than the mathematical expression intended. This caused many to arrive at another incorrect answer, showing how small details can completely change a calculation.

The puzzle became popular because it challenged people to slow down and look carefully instead of rushing to solve it. Many were surprised that their first instincts were wrong, proving that even simple-looking problems can test logical thinking.

The correct answer is one. The trick was not advanced mathematics, but understanding the exact meaning of each symbol and following the calculation carefully. As the puzzle showed, sometimes the hardest problems are the ones that appear easiest at first glance.
