Check Your Change

Most coins pass through our hands without a second thought, but one ordinary-looking penny can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The 1943 Bronze Lincoln Cent is one of America’s most famous coin errors, created by accident during World War II.

In 1943, copper was urgently needed for ammunition, wiring, and military equipment. The U.S. Mint therefore replaced bronze pennies with zinc-coated steel cents. During the changeover, however, a few bronze blanks were accidentally left inside the presses. When 1943 dies were used, those leftover blanks were struck, creating pennies that were never supposed to exist.

The unusual coins were first discovered in the late 1940s, surprising collectors and starting a nationwide search. People checked old coin jars, piggy banks, and collections, hoping to find one of the mysterious copper-colored pennies. Today, fewer than two dozen authentic examples are believed to exist, with known coins coming from Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco.

Their rarity makes them extremely valuable. Condition matters greatly, and some examples have sold for six figures, while one exceptionally preserved specimen brought more than $1 million. The coin’s value comes not only from its price but from its history: “You can’t recreate the wartime conditions that caused it.”

What makes the story even more fascinating is that some examples may still be undiscovered. A forgotten collection, old jar, or estate box could theoretically contain one. The odds are incredibly small, but that possibility keeps collectors searching.

The 1943 bronze penny is more than a valuable coin. It represents a moment when war, human error, and chance came together to create something extraordinary. “Sometimes, it’s hiding in plain sight”—and that is exactly why this tiny penny continues to capture people’s imagination.
